A Roadmap to Citizen Science Education

BRITEC

Welcome to the "A Roadmap to Citizen Science Education" MOOC

On this page

"BRITEC MOOC “A roadmap to citizen science Education” will provide materials and stories of implementation from innovative citizen science education projects. Citizen Science Education is based on the assumption that teachers and researchers can find a common ground of discussion and develop practices that are advantageous both, for the education sector, and the science sector.

Therefore, this course proposes a process of collaboration between teachers and researchers. It provides insights from the perspective of researchers that have supported teachers developing STEM learning scenarios that include scientific activities based on the needs of active research projects.

The pedagogical information offered in this course revolves around raising awareness regarding the latest developments in the field of STEM didactics. The main objective of this MOOC however, is to provide instructional design guidelines and the necessary resources so that teachers can develop a learning scenario of their own."

Learning objectives

  • Learn more about the process of integrating scientific activities in STEM teaching
  • Explore the possibilities that classrooms’ learning environment can utilize once teachers’ and scientists’ forces are combined
  • Learn how to contextualize in class deeper scientific knowledge while keeping the teaching engaging
  • Develop a citizen science learning scenario

Prerequisites

This course targets teachers that are interested in bringing science in their class through designing, developing and implementing citizen science education projects.

Modules

  • Module 1: An Introduction to Citizen Science and Bringing Research into the Classroom - opens on 22/03/2021
  • Module 2: How to Bring Citizen Science in Your Classroom - opens on 29/03/2021
  • Module 3: Mainstreaming Innovation in Your Class - opens on 05/04/2021
  • Module 4: Submit Your Citizen Science Learning Scenario - opens on 12/04/2021

Certification

In order to earn a course certificate, participants will have to go through the peer assessment process that takes place at module 4. For the needs of this assignment you will have to use one of the course’s offered Citizen Science Education activities and come-up with a sequence of activities to contextualize it into school knowledge that covers learning objectives. This sequence of activities should be outlined in a detailed learning scenario that aims at fostering specific learning objectives within the school curriculum.

The final deadline to complete all activities is Wednesday, 28 April, 23:59 CEST. The participation in the quizzes will amount to 5% of the final grade. The learning scenario, together with the peer reviews, will count for 95% of the final grade.

The overall passing grade is 95%.

She has taken part in numerous MOOCs. She always tries to improve the quality of conducted classes by introducing innovative solutions, improving the scenarios of classes and  increasing students awareness and interest.

Behind the Course

With Europe's shortage of STEM skilled labour force, there is a real need for innovative approaches to demystify science, increase the motivation of the pupils towards STEM subjects and offer teacher training into new ways of introducing science in the classroom.

In this context, BRITEC aims towards: connecting schools with the world of research; introducing the Citizen Science (CS) approach in schools as a way of engaging pupils in research practice; creating a community of practice for teachers and researchers to exchange on how to bring research into the classroom; offering STEM teachers a way of participating in research activities; providing guidelines, resources, example of good practice and online training for STEM teachers in implementing CS at school.

The project is coordinated by the Institute of Geophysics (PAN), in collaboration with the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM)Open Technologies AllianceIbercivisKU Leuven and European Schoolnet.
