This MOOC seeks to familiarise educators with Computer Science, explain how teachers can use it in the classroom, and explore computer science as a potential future career option for students. Educators will explore how to cultivate students’ problem-solving skills and creative thinking while teaching computer science and computational thinking concepts.

Participants will get an overview of educational activities for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, visual and text-based programming. They will receive concrete resources, which they can use to teach computer science in their classroom, like Google for Education, Code Week and Code.org. At the end of the MOOC, participants will create a learning scenario that they can use in their classroom. They will get feedback from their peers and also assess their peers’ scenarios.

Learning objectives

  • To understand the basic concept of Computer Science (CS) and Computational Thinking (CT) and their integration into the classroom or/and educative activities at home.
  • To explore different innovative learning approaches in relation to CS and CT.
  • To try out different methods and tools to integrate coding and CT into teaching and learning activities with young people.
  • To explore Google and other resources to teach and learn CS and CT
  • To raise awareness for the impact of CS and CT in young people’s career prospects.
  • To reflect on the relevance of integrating CS and CT in the classroom or/and educative activities at home.

Prerequisites

This course is open to anyone interested in integrating Computer Science (CS) and Computational Thinking (CT) into their classroom, regardless of their background on the topic or skill level. However, the course is targeted mainly to teachers of any school subject in primary or secondary schools.

Many of the course materials and resources are available in several European languages, but the course content and the course assignments are entirely in English, so a basic level of understanding and writing is required.

Modules

  • Module 1: Basics opens on 25/04/2022
  • Module 2: Exploration opens on 02/05/2022
  • Module 3: Step up opens on 09/05/2022
  • Module 4: Wrap up opens on 16/05/2022

Certification

In order to earn a course certificate, course participants need to submit their own learning scenario before the deadline and review 3 of their peers' scenarios. The overall passing grade is 95%.

The final deadline to complete all activities is 01 June 2022, 23:59 CEST.

Jelena Milenkovic - Course Coordinator

(International Education & Policy / Coordination and Pedagogy) Jelena works as a Project Coordinator in the FCL/ESEP Department of European Schoolnet (EUN). She is the coordinator of the European Schoolnet Academy. Since joining European Schoolnet in 2018, Jelena worked as a web editor and MOOC creator for numerous projects, such as Scientix, TIWI, NBS, STE(A)M IT.

Nikki Medanovic - Community Moderator

Nikki is a Communications Intern with European Schoolnet Academy. Working on communications activities for all MOOCs, she works on engaging the community and raising awareness on EUN’s pedagogical offerings. She also works on communications activities for European Schoolnet Academy and helps run the European Schoolnet Academy blog. Currently, she is working towards a master’s in communications at Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
