The internet in general and social media in particular play an increasingly important role for the ways in which we socialise, we acquire information and learn. These new media require specific types of literacy from their users in order for them to take full advantage of the opportunities these digital environments offer, and to fully grasp the consequences of their behaviour online, while steering clear of any potential risks.

Schools have always played a crucial part in preparing their students for the future, and in our digital society, being social media literate is a prerequisite for young people to become active and informed citizens.

This MOOC will support your school in helping their students to take full advantage of the opportunities of social media in a safe and ethical way, by creating your own school strategy. Through a thorough introduction to the topic of social media literacy and the concept of strategic planning, you will then be able to tackle the social media issues most relevant to your school community.

In order to create your own social media literacy strategy, in this MOOC you will learn

  • To understand the social media landscape of your school community.
  • To identify relevant social media challenges.
  • To develop and implement your own social media literacy strategy in a participatory whole-school approach, tailored to the needs of your local school community.
  • To monitor and assess the efficiency and effectiveness of your whole-school strategy.


Join the “Social Media Literacy for Change” MOOC to receive advice from experts, as well as concrete suggestions on how to develop a social media literacy strategy for your school. You can also exchange with peers and like-minded professionals, and find a community that can help you reflect upon and improve your school practices. This MOOC will provide access to videos of inspiring practice and other support material, so that you will succeed in defining your own strategy for your school, step-by-step.

This course was developed within the Social Media Literacy for Change (sml4change) project.

Social Media Literacy for Change is a one year project co-funded by the European Commission's Media Literacy for All pilot project, which aims to support European school leaders and teachers, particularly those working with young people at risk of being socially marginalised, to foster social media literacy (SML) in both their school and local community, thus reaching out to citizens at large.

The course will run for 6.5 weeks, with a total number of 5 modules and an extra 1.5 grace weeks at the end of the course to complete the final learning activity and the peer review activity. We will be opening up a new module every Monday and all modules will remain open until the end of the course. The estimated workload is 5 hours per module. Total estimated time: approximately 25 hours.

Target audience

The course is designed for heads of schools, primary and secondary teachers, and teachers in initial training. Other stakeholders, such as teacher trainers, policy makers, youth workers, organisation dealing with online safety, etc. may also benefit from the course as an introduction to Social Media Literacy in educational contexts.


You will receive a course badge and a course certificate upon completion of the full course. The badge can be exported to the Mozilla Badge Backpack.

Each module includes some suggested learning activity that support you to design your own social media literacy strategy, phase by phase. The final learning activity will be to submit your social media literacy strategy (as progressively defined during the course) and to peer-review other participants' strategies. Both tasks are a pre-requisite in order for you to receive the Course Badge and the final Digital Certificate.
