TeachMeet: Tackling disinformation challenges in your school

A TeachMeet is an informal way of sharing ideas, good practices, lesson plans, etc. It is also a great way to network with other teachers and educators!

We will share best practices and great ideas how you or your school tackle disinformation, and any challenges you have faced in trying to counter disinformation among your students or the school community. In the end of this TeachMeet, you will also have the chance to ask questions to the speakers.

In this webinar, we hear from representatives from each of the Facts4All project partners.

They will discuss approaches to tackle disinformation in the classroom and resources that they have developed to empower teachers to discuss the issues with their students.

Speakers:

Gareth Cort 

Gareth works as an online safety consultant to European Schoolnet and the UK Safer Internet Centre, developing educational resources and delivering education and awareness sessions to youth and adults. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and is a qualified primary school teacher. 

Zara Mommerency  

Zara works as a project researcher at the Flemish Knowledge Centre for Medialiteracy 'Mediawijs' in the field of desinformation, propaganda, polarization and radicalization.

Kari Kivinen 

PhD Kari Kivinen is an Education Outreach Expert of the EUIPO OBSERVATORY. He has led the pedagogical development work at Faktabaari EDU digital information literacy service building on fact-checking methodology and co-authored and piloted the learning materials with fellow teachers around Finland and abroad. He is a member of the European Commission expert group tackling disinformation and promoting digital literacy.

Omar Seguna

Dr. Omar Seguna graduated with a doctorate in education from the University of Sheffield. His area of research is about the pedagogical affordances and challenges of portable devices. He also obtained a Masters in Information Technology Degree. Omar Seguna works as an Education Officer within the Ministry of Education Malta. Amongst his main duties he is responsible for the integration of technologies in teaching and learning, the prestigious “Embed” Digital Literacy Awards, the directorate’s website (https://digitalliteracy.skola.edu.mt/), and digital citizenship. He also delivered and organised a number of sessions including Office 365 and other education online tools Seguna worked as a teacher for 12 years, and as an eLearning Support Teacher for 3 years on several projects including Internet Safety and delivered several courses to adults including EU funded courses aimed to provide training in ICT as an entrepreneurial tool in business, for individuals who are employed with or own a microenterprise business, or are self-employed. He also served in the Information Management Unit for 2 years and was responsible for the logistics of the hardware refresh of desktops in school labs and offices.
