Welcome to the Integrated STEM Teaching for Primary Schools MOOC

This MOOC is relevant to primary school teachers (ages 5-11) of all levels of experience who are interested in learning how to go from teaching isolated Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics classes, to a real integrated STEM teaching of these topics, not only among themselves but with all other disciplines. This MOOC will examine the opportunities offered by integrated STEM teaching and will provide many practical examples.

Learning objectives

In this MOOC, you will:

  • Focus and learn about STEM integrated teaching approaches
  • Learn about innovative pedagogies
  • Contextualize STEM knowledge through industry-education cooperation
  • Explore STEM careers and the skills needed for these careers

Prerequisites

This course is relevant to all teachers who want to transform their teaching and enrich their skills by learning how to use and apply the STE(A)M integrated teaching in their classroom.

  • Module 1: Introduction to integrated STE(Α)M teaching & relevant pedagogies - opens on 26/10/2020
  • Module 2: STEM subjects and how STEM careers are contextualized at school - opens on 02/11/2020
  • Module 3: Examples of Integrated STEM teaching and Learning Scenarios - opens on 09/11/2020
  • Module 4: Create your learning scenario and peer-assessment - opens on 16/11/2020

Certification

In order to earn a course certificate, course participants need to pass all the quizzes, submit learning scenario and review three lesson plans of other participants. The final deadline to complete all activities is 02 December 2020, 23:59 CEST. In order to receive the certificate, the participation in the quizzes will count for 15%, and the learning scenario together with the peer reviews will count for 85%. The overall passing grade is 95%.

Participants who have successfully completed the STEM is Everywhere! course by Scientix previously, will be eligible to a super-certificate demonstrating their commitment to support and enhance STEM education in Europe and beyond.

Note to teachers from Portugal: You can get your successful participation in a European Schoolnet Academy course formally recognised as a valid continuous professional development, and thereby acquire the relevant number of training hours, by sending your certificate to the Conselho Científico e Pedagógico de Formação Contínua (CCPFC) at Rua do Forno, nº 30, 1º andar - apartado 2168, 4700 - 429 Braga, Portugal. Course Staff

Eleni Myrtsioti - course coordinator

Eleni Myrtsioti (Literature and communications / Project Coordination and Pedagogy) works as a Project Officer in the Science Education Department of European Schoolnet (EUN). Eleni is involved in Scientix, STEM School Label and STE(A)M IT projects. She supports Scientix by coordinating the Repository of educational resources and the 2020 STEM Discovery Campaign. In STEM School Label she is coordinating the activities of the network of twenty Ambassador STEM Schools providing guidance, mentorship, and resources to help them improve their STEM strategies. In STE(A)M IT she coordinates the activities of the eleven teams of teachers involved the project.

Jelena Milenkovic - course coordinator

(International Education & Policy / Coordination and Pedagogy) Jelena works as a Project Officer in the FCL-SEG Department of European Schoolnet (EUN). She is the coordinator of the European Schoolnet Academy. Since joining European Schoolnet in 2018, Jelena worked as a web editor and MOOC creator for numerous projects, such as Scientix, TIWI, STE(A)M IT.

Ivana Gugić - course moderator

Ivana is mathematics and physics teacher in Primary school Fran Galović in Zagreb, Croatia. In addition to „traditional“ teaching method in her class, she is working on numerous projects and extracurricular activities to show students a different approach to teaching methods and working with mathematics and physics. She is participating in various international and national projects in math, physics and astronomy. She is regularly improving her skills through MOOCs, lots of them on European Schoolnet Academy, with the aim of further career advancement, learning and acquiring new knowledge and skills and improving the quality of teaching.

Evita Tasiopoulou - Project Manager

(Engineer / Management and Pedagogy) is a Project and Pedagogical Manager of Science projects in the Science Education Department of European Schoolnet.
Her main activities focus on the management of the content in European projects and the provision of pedagogical advice and support to the entire STEM Education Department while her interests focus on STEM education pedagogical trends and the development of curricula, not only European. She is involved in projects linked to School Pilot activities, Structural Reform Support Programmes (SRSP) and innovative pedagogical approaches. She is currently working on SRSP – Greece,  SPSP Flanders (Teachers’ induction scheme), and  STEAM IT projects.
