STEM Out of The Box: A STEM Approach to Non-STEM Subjects

Scientix

Welcome to the MOOC STEM Out of The Box: A STEM Approach to Non-STEM Subjects

On this page

Teachers, do you want to learn how to integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in your lessons and help students develop deep scientific, mathematic, and problem-solving skills? Join this online course and learn how to introduce this way of thinking in early childhood, primary and secondary education. Help your students develop solutions to open-ended real-world problems which will engage them in the processes of scientific and higher-order thinking.

You will explore practical STEM classroom activities and ideas, rooted in real-world problems. The course will guide you through exemplary STEM lesson plans created and tested by other teachers, resources, and challenges to increase students’ knowledge and skills needed for the future.

You can follow the course at your own pace. We will open one module at the beginning of each week, but there are only a few deadlines you need to pay attention to (those for the quizzes and the peer assessment activity).

Join us already in the Facebook group or share your thoughts on Twitter using the hashtag #STEMOutoftheBox.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the value of STEM in the classroom, regardless of the age of the students or the subject.
  • Gain a well-rounded understating of the STEM skills needed for future careers.
  • Explore how to teach STEM in Early childhood education, Primary and Secondary school in non-STEM lessons.
  • Learn about teaching STEM using real-life challenges and pedagogical principles of problem-based learning, higher-order thinking, and collaborative learning

Prerequisites

This course is relevant to Early childhood educators and Primary teachers interested in STEM as well as Secondary teachers who teach non-STEM subjects (Humanities, Arts, Literature and Business studies). This MOOC will help teachers transform their lessons by integrating STEM activities in their everyday classrooms.

Modules

  • Module 1: Introduction to STEM for the Future opens on 12/09/2022
  • Module 2: Innovative Pedagogies for STEM Teaching opens on 19/09/2022
  • Module 3: STEM Skills and Higher Order Thinking opens on 26/09/2022
  • Module 4: Design Learning Scenarios to Engage Students opens on 03/10/2022

Certification

In order to earn a course certificate, course participants need to submit their own learning scenario and review three learning scenarios of other participants. The final deadline to complete all activities is Wednesday, 19 October 2022, 23:59 CEST.

The participation in the graded activities (such as drag and drop, polls, multiple-choice questions, etc.) will amount to 5% of the final grade and is not a requirement for receiving the course certificate. The learning scenario, together with the peer reviews, will count for 95% of the final grade.

The overall passing grade is 95%.
