We are delighted to have Susanna Louhimies from the European Commission to deliver a webinar titled “Policy making to bring the Three R’s alive” on the use of animals in science 28 September at 18:00 CEST. In this webinar, learn about the evolving ethical and legal framework related to the use of animals in science to prepare students for an informed and balanced debate, and to aid critical thinking and active citizenship moving from a polarized to more nuanced understanding of the complexities of animal research! Susanna Louhimies is an expert on the EU directive on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes, with specific knowledge in the legislation, Three R’s, animal housing and care, genetically altered animals and the scientific aspects of laboratory animal use.

Speaker:

Susanna Louhimies works at the European Commission, the Directorate-General for the Environment since 1996. She is responsible for the EU Directive on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes and any horizontal issues in relation to scientific, educational and regulatory use of animals. As an integral part of her portfolio she follows closely the implementation of the principle of the Three Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of animal use) in different policy areas. She is also responsible for the co-ordination of the regulatory acceptance of new and updated testing methods in the EU legislative framework for chemicals (REACH), as well as promoting their acceptance internationally, mainly through the work of the OECD.

You are in front of your students and your first instinct is to teach them what you know, what is in the textbooks and to explain what is happening outside the window and inside their bodies. You must transmit this knowledge and they need it for thriving in their lives. However, we do not want them only to carry this knowledge, we want them to use it to challenge the world. We must show them what is already known, but we must teach them how to use such information to create new and better knowledge. We must teach creativity to develop new solutions, new technologies that can also help us to replace animals in science. Let’s discuss together how this can be achieved.

Speaker:

Dr. Marco Straccia is the founder of FRESCI and SCIENCE&STRATEGY SL; he is a former associate professor and researcher in Stem Cell Technology and Regenerative Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Barcelona. He holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience (Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain; 2012), a M.B.A. (Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya; 2018); a M.S. in International Health and Tropical Medicine (Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain; 2008) and a B.S. in Biology (Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”; 005). Dr. Straccia has been a researcher for the last eighteen years in the field of basic and applied biomedicine in many institutions in Europe and working on different experimental paradigms (in vivo and in vitro), with a FELASA certification since 2008. He has a deep experience in stem cell biology and has developed advanced in vitro models for high-throughput drug discovery, safety testing and disease modelling during his postdoctoral period. He co-authored seventeen peer-reviewed publications and contributed to the first two editions of “Guide to the quality and safety of tissue and cells for human application” by European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare of Council of Europe.

Jukka Sund - is a molecular biologist and biochemist from Helsinki, Finland. He did his Master’s thesis on virology, and PhD on the health effects of engineered nanomaterials. He has a wide experience of different techniques and technologies in life sciences: e.g. molecular biology methods, cell culture, proteomics, electron microscopy and more recently high throughput technologies. He has been working at European Union Reference Laboratory for the Validation of Alternative Methods (EURL ECVAM) for three years. He is the main colleague responsible for the robotic platforms. Jukka’s ambition is to automate everything, since the robots are more precise, more reliable, and much faster than a human. It does not sleep and creates a log of everything it has done.
